We all managed to sleep a few hours after arriving, and then started the day with a wonderful breakfast buffet. I'm glad we feasted well because we were too busy to spend more time eating today (and now it's supper time and we're ready to sleep). In addition to the typical western menu, we had Chinese pancakes (much like a sweet pastry), fried rice, fried noodles, and dumplings.

We toured one of the remaining 700-year-old neighborhoods called a hutong. (Many have been demolished to make way for "progress.")  This was a fascinating look (by pedicab) at old China - a maze of narrow alleyways, homes, courtyards and shops. Most of the afternoon was spent at the Forbidden City (absolutely stunning - see movie "The Last Emperor") after a hike across Tianamen Square.  A brief tour at a silk factory gave Faya the chance to handle silkworms!

The smog level was through the roof earlier in the week, but thankfully that has cleared up somewhat. When we arrived late last night, there was a definite smell (and taste) to the air.  Today started clear and sunny.  By 3pm, there was a thick haze over the city from all of the cars on the road. We learned that it is not easy to get a driver's license here, because they limit the number approved in order to limit pollution from so many cars.  If you are allowed at some point, the cost is about $8000 US dollars!

I'll try to post a few photos. Then, sleep...
